'Promising the Sky': India to send manned Space mission by 2022, says PM Modi

Indian astronaut  in space for seven days will  cost less than Rs 10,000 Crore.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that  India will send a manned mission to space by 2022.

He made this disclosure in his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort on Wednesday.

“In space technology, we have dreamt something, our scientists have dreamt something. And I am happy to announce that by 2022, the 75th Independence year, we are planning a manned space mission,” PM Modi said.

PM said India was proud of its scientists, who were excelling in their research and were at the forefront of innovation.

“Our scientists have made us proud. They launched over 100 satellites… They successfully completed the Mars mission.”

After Chandrayaan-1, India’s first lunar probe launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation in October 2008 and operated until August 2009, and Mangalyaan, a space probe orbiting Mars since September 24, 2014, ‘Gaganyaan’ will be India’s third space project.

It is for the first time, India’s space agency is planning to put an Indian astronaut for seven days in space at a cost less than Rs 10,000 crore.

“He will be in a spacecraft, 300-400 km above earth,” Sivan said, as he explained that the rocket to be used for the manned mission would be a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV-Mk III).
