In a significant step towards workplace inclusivity, the Karnataka Government has approved the Menstrual Leave Policy 2025, authorizing one paid menstrual leave per month for women employed across both government and private sectors in the State.
Under the newly approved policy, women will be entitled to up to 12 paid menstrual leave days annually, marking a first-of-its-kind welfare initiative in Karnataka. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah through an official statement, highlighting the State’s commitment to fostering a compassionate and equitable work environment.
As per reports, the policy will extend to women employed in government departments, garment industries, multinational corporations, IT companies, and other private establishments operating within the State.
This policy framework is based on recommendations submitted in 2024 by an expert committee chaired by Dr. Sapna S, Associate Dean and Head of the School of Law at Christ (Deemed to be) University. The committee comprised members from diverse sectors, including representatives from industry bodies, labour unions, government officials, medical professionals, and academicians from institutes such as the Institute of Social and Economic Change (ISEC) and Christ University.
