YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, moves Supreme Court challenging multiple FIRs registered against him in different states over alleged obscene and vulgar remarks made during a show. The Court made it clear that oral mentions were not permitted and maintained that the case would be heard on the scheduled date.
The controversy arose from an episode of “India’s Got Latent”, recorded on November 14, 2024, at Khar Habitat and aired recently, featuring Allahbadia, comedian Samay Raina, YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani, and others. The show’s panel allegedly used abusive language, leading to the filing of FIRs in Maharashtra and Assam.
Senior Advocate Abhinav Chandrachud, appearing for Allahbadia, sought an urgent hearing before Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, emphasizing that multiple FIRs were being lodged against his client. However, the CJI firmly refused the request, reiterating that oral mentions were not entertained.
During the brief exchange, Chandrachud stressed the urgency, mentioning that the Assam police were actively involved in the matter. The CJI, however, remained resolute, stating, “No, Mr. Chandrachud, no oral mentioning.” When counsel pointed out that the petition was filed under Article 32 of the Constitution, the Court reiterated that a date had already been assigned for the hearing and that it was a fresh matter.
The Supreme Court’s refusal to allow an oral mention underscores its adherence to procedural discipline while dealing with urgent requests. The case will now be heard on the designated date as per the Court’s schedule.
