Yusuf Dikec, an Olympic pistol shooter from Turkey, has become a global sensation after his distinctive, casual shooting stance at the Paris Games went viral. Dikec’s non-shooting hand, casually tucked into his pocket during competition, caught the attention of fans, competitors, and even Elon Musk, the world’s richest man. The relaxed pose has drawn comparisons to the iconic fictional spy James Bond, spawning a wave of memes and imitation across the sports world and beyond.

Recognizing the widespread appeal of his stance, Dikec has taken steps to protect his newfound signature move. He recently registered a trademark with the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office to safeguard his now-famous attitude, following attempts by others to capitalize on his image without his consent. Erdinc Bilgili, Dikec’s instructor, confirmed the decision.

"After being informed of numerous trademark registration initiatives carried out without Yusuf Dikec's knowledge, we applied about a week ago," Bilgili told AFP. He added that "other applications have been rejected."

The trademark move serves two primary purposes: protecting Dikec’s intellectual property and preventing unauthorized commercial use of his likeness. The popularity of Dikec’s stance has led to a flood of merchandise featuring his image, including T-shirts, mugs, and phone cases. Turkish news outlet TRT Haber highlighted the significance of this trademark protection, given the extensive sales of these products.

While the move has generated buzz among Dikec’s growing fan base, the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office has not yet commented on the status of the application.

The Origins of Dikec’s Signature Stance

Dikec has explained the natural origins of his now-famous hand-in-pocket gesture, saying, "I merely do it to maintain my equilibrium and to keep my body more stable. Nothing more to it." Though simple, the gesture resonated deeply with audiences, who saw Dikec’s calm demeanour as embodying Olympic values of fair play, simplicity, and clarity.

However, Dikec revealed that his outward calmness concealed intense emotions during the competition. "At that moment, everyone says I seemed very calm, but actually, storms were raging inside me," the former Turkish Gendarmerie officer shared. His unassuming appearance—marked by a plain yellow earplug and conventional glasses rather than high-tech gear—has only bolstered his image as a symbol of resilience and focus.

A Global Icon

Dikec’s newfound fame has led to interactions with high-profile figures like Elon Musk. Following the Olympics, Dikec posted a lighthearted question to Musk on the social media platform X, asking if future robots could win Olympic medals while keeping their hands in their pockets.

Musk’s witty reply, "Robots will hit the centre of the bullseye every time," added to Dikec’s growing cultural status. Tributes from other athletes, such as Swedish pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis, who mimicked Dikec’s stance after breaking a world record, have further cemented his iconic image.

Looking ahead, Dikec is focused on the Los Angeles 2028 Games, where he is determined to achieve his professional goals. With confidence, he declared, "My partner and I will get the gold at the Los Angeles 2028 Games." In a playful jab at Serbia’s current gold medalist Damir Mikec, Dikec added, "I've only lent you the gold medal until 2028."

As the world eagerly watches Dikec’s next steps, his trademarked stance continues to inspire and entertain, making him a standout figure in both the sports and cultural arenas.
