In a recent development, three men have been found guilty in a high-profile murder case involving the fatal stabbing of Karamjeet Singh Reel, an Indian-origin man, outside a pub in southwest London last year. The Metropolitan Police announced on Thursday that the convicted individuals will be sentenced at a later date.
Karamjeet Singh Reel, affectionately known as Kam, was discovered collapsed in the doorway of a pub on Staines Road in Hounslow on June 25, 2022. Despite the efforts of the pub's staff, customers, and emergency services, Kam tragically lost his life at the scene. A post-mortem examination confirmed that he succumbed to a stab wound to the heart.
The trial, held at Wood Green Crown Court in London, concluded on Wednesday with significant findings. Wesley Angel, aged 33, was convicted of Kam's murder. Meanwhile, Wesley's brother, Nathan Angel, aged 24, was acquitted of murder but had previously pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of manslaughter and conspiracy to rob, similar to Bobby Dunleavy, aged 26.
Detective Chief Inspector Jim Shirley of the Metropolitan Police expressed his thoughts on the case, stating, "This was a pre-planned and brutal attack on a man who was lured out of his flat by a group of men intent on causing serious harm in order to rob him. Karamjeet's life was suddenly taken away, leaving his family and friends understandably devastated. Our thoughts are with them at this time. We are pleased the jury recognized the strength of evidence against Wesley Angel, and we now expect all three men to be handed significant custodial sentences."
The murder investigation launched by the Met Police revealed that Kam resided just across the road from the pub. Upon entering his flat, investigators discovered GBP 25,000 in cash and a substantial amount of cocaine. It became evident that Kam had been targeted by individuals or a group who were aware of his involvement in drug dealing and had planned to rob him.
CCTV footage played a crucial role in identifying two individuals with their faces concealed, entering and leaving the building shortly before the attack. Although the corridor lacked camera coverage, it was established that Kam had exited his flat and was viciously assaulted by the assailants lying in wait.
In an emotional statement, Karamjeet's mother, Jasbir Kaur Reel, expressed her pain, saying, "To the three defendants, you took away Karamjeet's hope, his life, his dreams. You took away my hopes and my dreams of growing old and seeing Karamjeet happy with a partner and children. Every bone in my body misses Karamjeet. We are now serving a life sentence without Karamjeet. No sentence for them will be enough."
Subsequent inquiries led the police to apprehend the Angel brothers in June of last year. During questioning, Wesley admitted their plan to rob Kam and acknowledged that he had stabbed him during the altercation. However, he claimed that the knife was intended to intimidate rather than be used as a weapon.
Mobile phone analysis revealed multiple calls made to a number linked to Bobby Dunleavy, who was subsequently arrested. Further investigation established that Dunleavy was one of Kam's customers and had disclosed his location to the Angel brothers. Minutes before the murder, Dunleavy deceitfully contacted Kam under the guise of arranging a drug deal, effectively luring him out of his flat to facilitate the robbery.
By examining CCTV footage and mobile phone records, the Met Police successfully demonstrated that the three men had congregated at a nearby pub before the attack. The footage captured them engaged in intense conversation, with Dunleavy even simulating punches, mirroring the planned assault on Kam.
Following the stabbing, the Angel brothers abandoned their vehicle, discarded the knife used in the crime, and incinerated the belongings stolen from their victim.
