On Thursday, a demand for enhanced post-retirement protection for members of the judiciary has reached Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with Senior Advocate and Bar leader Adish C. Aggarwala urging the Centre to introduce lifelong security cover for retired Supreme Court and High Court judges. The proposal also seeks at least 10 years of security protection for retired district judiciary officers, highlighting growing concerns over threats faced by judges even after leaving office.

In his communication to the Prime Minister, Senior Advocate, who heads the All India Bar Association and is a former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, stressed that judges routinely decide politically sensitive, criminal, and high-stakes disputes that may provoke hostility from affected parties.

He argued that judicial officers remain vulnerable long after retirement because many rulings impact influential individuals, organised criminal networks, and disgruntled litigants. The representation comes amid increasing conversations around judicial independence and institutional safeguards for judges handling sensitive matters.

Emphasising the nature of judicial duties, Aggarwala stated that judges perform “highly sensitive judicial and constitutional functions” and may continue to face resentment and danger even after demitting office. The letter underlined that threats to former judges are not confined to their tenure and called for a structured, long-term security framework to protect retired members of the higher and subordinate judiciary. The request now awaits consideration by the Union government.
