On Thursday, Delhi Govt announced a ban on entry of medium & heavy vehicles in the city from Oct 1 2022 to Feb 28, 2023, in a bid to curb air pollution this winter.

The Govt of Delhi had also written on June 15 to its neighbouring states, including Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, urging them to allow only BS6-compliant buses to enter the city from Oct 1 in order to help keep pollution levels in check.

The letter written by Special Commissioner, Transport, O.P. Mishra said that the situation of air pollution in the national capital has attracted the attention of the Apex Court and the CAQM (Commission of Air Quality Management in Delhi & NCR), both of which have issued directions for effective regulation of air pollution & vehicular pollution.

Delgi witnesses high levels of air pollution in the winter months every year from around October onwards due to a range of factors including stubble burning in neighbouring states & vehicular traffic leading to the breathing & other problems. According to a 2015 study by IIT Kanpur on percentage of pollution done by different vehicles, vehicle emissions account for an average of 25% PM 2.5 levels, going up to 36% in the winters.

Trucks & 2-wheelers account for larger chunks of PM 2.5 pollution than passenger cars’ contribution of 14-15% to overall vehicle emissions. The study concluded that trucks are the major contributors to PM 2.5 pollution among vehicles - up to 46%.

Out of the tens of thousands of trucks entering the city, only CNG-powered commercial vehicles, e-trucks & vehicles carrying essential goods like vegetables, fruits, grains, eggs, ice, milk & petroleum products will be allowed to enter during the aforementioned period.
