April 7,2019:
The suit alleges that Peloton used more than 1,000 unlicensed recordings songs from the various artists such as Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake without their permission.
The copyright infringement lawsuit, seeking damages in excess of $150 million, was filed in the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York.
Peloton, a fitness bike purveyor, which was valued at $4 billion in 2019, has gained a significant market share by selling more than 400,000 indoor exercise bikes.
The bikes offer at-home fitness options for the person who is too busy for the gym where they could stream their favourite musical artists while cycling.
Peloton manufactures and sells bicycles starting at $2,245 and Peloton owners pay an additional $39 per month to access unlimited on-demand classes for cycling, running, yoga and other activities. The virtual spin classes have attracted several devotees, including prominent celebrities such as Usain Bolt, Hugh Jackman and David Beckham.
The National Music Publishers’ Association, who filed the lawsuit, said Peloton used more than a thousand songs without the consent of the owner which leads to a “great deal” of lost income to them, according to the lawsuit.
Now, the company’s reputation and brand image are under threat from a copyright lawsuit that accuses the 7-year-old prestigious brand of stealing music.
