1	Q	How do I join the Merchant Navy ?
	A	To become an officer, write the Joint Entrance Examination of the IIT's and apply to MERI for Engineers and Chanakya for Deck Officers. Your rank in the examination will be considered for selection. Selected candidates will have to undergo further pre-sea training before joining the career at sea. Ratings i.e other than officers have to undergo pre-sea training in any DGS approved institutes. Graduate mechanical engineers can attend any DGS approved workshops for training prior going to sea.

	A	Yes, you can get one if you meet other requirements such as relevant STCW courses.
3	Q	Can I join any courses conducted by MMD ?
	A	MMD does not conduct any courses, it only conducts various examinations for sea-going personnel.
4	Q	Can I get a refund of the fees paid ?
	A	No.
5	Q	How can I pay the fees ?
	A	Fees are payable only by DD drawn on "Principal Officer MMD Mumbai" payable at Mumbai.
6	Q	Where I can get more details regarding examinations ?
	A	For details refer to the META manual Vol I and II.
7	Q	I do not have any sailing experience for the last 5 years. How can I revalidate my COC ?
	A	If you have marine related experience, like attending superintendents can apply for revalidation. Others will have to undergo orals or sail as supernumerary or in a rank one below for three months.
8	Q	What is the GMDSS requirement for coastal vessels ?
	A	For the requirement refer to the DGS letter No. 14-NT(2)/98 dated 10.03.2000.
9	Q	Does India allow bareboat Charter for Registration ?
	A	No
10	Q	When can I apply for the renewal survey of a ship ?
	A	Within three months from the date of expiry of the Certificate.	Top..

	A	Within three months (plus or minus) from the anniversary date.
12	Q	How can I get my registration as a ship repair unit ?
	A	Apply with all the relevant details regarding your current activity to DGS.
13	Q	How can I get an approval for a DGS approved course ?
	A	Apply with all relevant details to DGS for in-principle approval. Once that is completed sucessfully you can apply for approval of the course.
14	Q	Our ship was detained under PSC, what do we need to do ?
	A	Immediately inform DGS with details of the detention and your comments and take steps to rectify deficiencies immediately.
15	Q	Whom should I send any grievances to?
	A	Please address the same to the "Grievance Officer MMD Mumbai". Additionally, you can send the same via the feedback section on our website.
16	Q	Where is the examination centre located ?
	A	The examination centre is located in Nau Bhavan near DGS at Ballard Estate.
17	Q	Whether Foreign Flag Passenger Ship require to obtain Trading Licence from D.G.S.?
	A	Central Governmemt letter No.SR-13020/97/2003-MA dated 26/12/2003,decided to allow Foreign Flag Vessels carrying Passengers to more than one Indian Port for a period of 5 years from the date of issue of above letter without obtaining Licence from the DGS under Section 403(3) of M.S.Act, 1958 .
