The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has expressed deep sorrow over the recent aircraft tragedy near Ahmedabad, Gujarat, which claimed multiple lives, including those of medical professionals and students.
In its statement, the SCBA noted that it is “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life” and extended its solidarity to the victims’ families, stating, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to those who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate incident. Our prayers and support remain with the families during this time of immense loss.” The Association emphasised the need for accountability and comprehensive review of safety protocols to prevent recurrence of such incidents, especially involving international carriers operating within Indian jurisdiction.
The fatal crash involved a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating as Air India flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick. The aircraft, carrying 242 individuals, including 12 crew members, crashed shortly after takeoff at approximately 13:38 IST from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
Preliminary findings from local law enforcement, as confirmed by Ahmedabad Joint Commissioner of Police Jaipal Singh Rathore, suggest that the aircraft collided with the building after takeoff. A distress call (Mayday) was received by Air Traffic Control, following which all communication ceased. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by aviation regulatory authorities and forensic experts.
Air India, in its official communication, confirmed the incident and disclosed the composition of passengers onboard, 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian national, and seven Portuguese nationals. The airline stated that emergency medical assistance was being provided and a helpline was activated for the families of those affected.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) are expected to conduct a comprehensive inquiry under the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules, 2017. Legal experts indicate that the findings of these agencies could lead to further judicial review or claims under international aviation liability frameworks, including the Montreal Convention, to which India is a signatory.
Legal practitioners have called for a closer examination of Air India’s adherence to safety obligations under Indian aviation law, and for expeditious compensation mechanisms to be activated for the victims and their families.
As rescue operations continue and the nation mourns the lives lost, legal accountability, regulatory scrutiny, and institutional responsibility are now at the forefront of public and judicial concern.
