The Supreme Court took up a case that has raised serious concerns about the safety of medicines in India, following the deaths of children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan allegedly caused by toxic cough syrups. The PIL highlights systemic lapses in drug regulation and calls for a thorough, court-monitored investigation to prevent such tragedies in the future.

A Bench comprising CJI B R Gavai and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, and Justice K Vinod Chandran took note of the petitioner and lawyer Vishal Tiwari’s submission on the urgency of the matter. The Court has scheduled the hearing for October 10, 2025.

The petition requests the transfer of all pending FIRs and investigations concerning the deaths to the CBI. It also seeks the formation of a National Judicial Commission or Expert Committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge to ensure uniformity and fairness. The plea further urges the central government to identify regulatory failures and mandate toxicological testing of all suspect products through NABL-accredited laboratories before any sale or export.
