The President of India has appointed Justice Surya Kant, as the next Chief Justice of India. He will assume charge on November 24, 2025, succeeding the incumbent Chief Justice BR Gavai, who demits office a day earlier on November 23.
The announcement was made by the Union Minister for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, who stated that the appointment was made “in exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India.” Extending his greetings, the Minister congratulated Justice Kant and wished him a successful tenure.
The elevation comes following a recommendation made earlier this week by Chief Justice BR Gavai, who, as per established convention, proposed the name of Justice Surya Kant as his successor.
Justice Surya Kant, who will serve as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, is set to hold office until February 9, 2027. His appointment marks yet another chapter in the continued tradition of seniority in the selection of the country’s top judicial office.
