In a major development ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, opposition parties are set to formally submit an impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha at 2 PM on Monday, sources have confirmed.

As per reports, more than 100 Members of Parliament have endorsed the draft motion seeking the removal of Justice Varma, whose name has surfaced in connection with a serious controversy following the alleged recovery of burnt currency notes from his residence. The impeachment initiative has gained cross-party traction, with members from the Congress and the INDIA bloc extending active support.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, speaking on the matter, confirmed that the process of collecting signatures had crossed the 100-MP mark. “The signature collection is already underway and has exceeded 100,” Rijiju stated when questioned about the status of the impeachment motion.

When asked whether the motion would be introduced during the upcoming Monsoon Session beginning July 21, the Minister noted that the matter would be considered in accordance with parliamentary procedures. “The impeachment proceedings in the case of Justice Varma will be a collective undertaking involving all parties. This is not a unilateral move by the government,” he clarified. He further stated that decisions regarding scheduling of business are subject to approval by the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) and the Chair.

Congress MP K. Suresh, after participating in the all-party meeting convened ahead of the Monsoon Session, confirmed his party’s full support for the move. “The INDIA bloc parties are backing this effort and are signing the letter to the Speaker. The Congress has already contributed 40 signatures toward the motion,” he told ANI.

The impeachment motion, once submitted with the requisite number of signatories, may set the stage for a rare and serious constitutional process under Article 124(4) of the Constitution, which governs the removal of High Court and Supreme Court judges on grounds of proved misbehaviour or incapacity.
