Lawyers held a protest at the Kullu SP Office over the arrest of a Senior Advocate on the charge of misbehaving with a woman Police officer on the night of Nov 15.

The lawyers gathered in a large number under the banner of the Kullu Bar Association & raised slogans against the Police. They questioned the functioning of the Superintendent of Police & demanded his immediate transfer.

They threatened to observe a pen-down strike in case action against their fellow Chuneshwar Thakur wasn’t rolled back.

The case

According to Kullu SP Gaurav Singh, senior advocate Chuneshwar Thakur was drunk & he refused to sign an alcohol test slip & misbehaved with police personnel

Terming the police case false, Bar association has threatened a pen-down strike until the case is withdrawn & the Kullu SP apologises

Lawyer Mahender Thakur, Ex-President of the Association, alleged that policemen misused the Police Act & tortured Chuneshwar whereas there was a provision to submit a personal bond. He added several sections were imposed against the senior advocate even after he got bail.

Bar association president Sanjay Thakur said the police treated Chuneshwar as if they had caught a terrorist. The agitation would continue till the “false” complaint was withdrawn & the Kullu SP apologises, he said, adding that the police should make public the video of the incident.

The Police had arrested Senior Lawyer Chuneshwar Thakur for reportedly obstructing the Police work. Kullu SP Gaurav Singh had alleged the advocate was drunk & he refused to sign the alcohol test slip & misbehaved with Police personnel.
