The Delhi High Court on Monday granted interim relief to actor Rajpal Yadav, suspending the sentence imposed on him in cheque dishonour cases till March 18. The order paves the way for his temporary release from custody, offering limited reprieve while keeping strict judicial oversight intact.
The matter arises from Yadav’s conviction in multiple cheque bounce cases filed by a private company, where repeated assurances of settlement allegedly went unfulfilled. Earlier, the High Court had taken a stern view of the actor’s conduct, directing him to surrender at Tihar Jail after noting repeated breaches of undertakings to clear dues. The Court had underscored that celebrity status could not justify special indulgence in compliance with court orders.
Granting interim suspension, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma recorded that the actor had now paid ₹1.5 crore to the complainant company and sought temporary relief citing a marriage in his family. At the same time, the Court reiterated its earlier displeasure, observing that Yadav’s past conduct “deserves to be deprecated” due to failure to honour payment commitments despite repeated opportunities.
Consequently, the sentence was suspended only till the next date, with a clear direction that Yadav must remain present, physically or via video conferencing, when the matter is taken up again.
