On Monday, Justice Mamidana Jagannadha Rao, a distinguished former judge of the Supreme Court of India, passed away at the age of 88. He was the father of Justice MS Ramachandra Rao, the current Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. Justice Rao hailed from a family with a notable judicial legacy, as his father briefly served as a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, and his paternal uncle, Justice M Krishna Rao, also held the position of judge at the same court.
Justice Jagannadha Rao was born on December 2, 1935, and began his legal career upon enrolling with the Bar Council of Hyderabad on July 25, 1960. His judicial journey commenced when he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on September 29, 1982. Two months later, he was elevated to the position of a permanent judge.
In 1991, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, and subsequently, in 1994, he was transferred to the Delhi High Court, where he served as Chief Justice until 1997. Justice Rao's remarkable career culminated with his appointment to the Supreme Court on March 21, 1997. He retired from the apex court on December 1, 2000. Justice Jagannadha Rao is remembered for his significant contributions to the judiciary and his commitment to upholding the rule of law.
