Smt. Shanti Gogoi, wife of Assam's former Chief Minister Keshab Chandra Gogoi and mother of former Chief Justice of India, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, died on Friday morning after a brief illness, at the age of 87 years.

She was being treated in a private hospital in Delhi for heart related ailments and had undergone an operation recently.

Her mortal remains were brought to Dibrugarh, Assam on Friday evening by flight. Cremation took place on Saturday morning. Cremation was followed by offering food to children and homeless people.

Smt. Shanti Gogoi was an award-winning author and a prominent social worker, who was running Socio Educational Welfare Association (SEWA) to facilitate the well-being of marginalised communities, which she founded in 2000, two years after the death of her husband.

She is survived by three sons and two daughters.

Smt. Gogoi had authored numerous books. Recognising her splendid works, in 2013, she was awarded the prestigious Labanya Hazarika Adarsha Matri Award.

Born in a political family, Smt. Gogoi's father was a member of the Legislative Council in the late 1930s and her mother Padmakumari Gohain was a Cabinet Minister in Assam. Her family roots can be traced back to the royal family of Ahom dynasty.

She was also former president of All Assam Lekhika Samaroh Samiti (women writers association), advisor of Mahila Samiti, besides being associated with various social institutions.

Last year, Smt. Shanti Gogoi had donated ₹1 lakh to PM-CARES Fund in the fight against the menace of coronavirus.
