The State Intellectual Property Corporation has led in documenting and securing geographical indication (GI) tags for iconic Goan culinary products, such as the famed Goan fish curry rice and traditional bread variants such as the pao, poie, and uno.

Deepak Parab, the patent facilitation officer for the GI tag, said that the documentation procedures for the famous fish curry rice and the selection of local bread have commenced. Parab emphasised the need to solicit comments and observations from restaurant sector residents and representatives to provide a complete and authentic representation of these cultural staples.

He stated they had begun obtaining the GI designation for Goa's renowned meal, fish curry rice, and traditional Goan bread kinds such as pao, poise, and uno. The Intellectual Property Corporation seeks to capture the essence, historical significance, and unique characteristics of these culinary treasures that hold deep cultural roots for the Goan community. The call for suggestions from locals marks a critical step in the documentation process.

The GI labelling programme recognises and preserves the authenticity of these traditional meals and protects against distortion. The procedure guarantees that these culinary delicacies are correctly identified to their geographical origin by involving and celebrating Goa's cultural legacy and gastronomic tradition, therefore helping to preserve Goan's culinary heritage.

Goa has obtained GI status for a variety of products, including cashew feni, mancurad, Harmal chilli, bebinca, khajem (sweet), Myndoli banana, cashew kernel, seven-ridge okra, and Khola chilli.
