About the Opportunity

The National Law School of India invites applications from practising lawyers and legal professionals for a capacity-building workshop on ‘public interest lawyering’ held on June 1 & 2 (Sat-Sun), 2024, at the NLSIU campus in Bengaluru.

The Ford Foundation Chair on Public Interest Law and the IBA-CLE Professorial Chair in Continuing Legal Education at NLSIU are organizing the workshop.

The workshop will focus on public interest lawyering, examining the strategic role of public interest law in bringing about social change and the challenges confronting public interest law today.

About the Workshop

This non-residential workshop is open to practising lawyers and legal professionals who are:

  • keen to develop varied perspectives on public interest lawyering in India
  • examine the strategic role of public interest law in bringing about social change and current challenges
  • identify and hone the skill sets necessary to work in public interest law, and
  • interact with lawyers and academicians working in the area of public interest law

This workshop examines the possibilities and limitations of public interest lawyering and how legal and non-legal priorities underpin public interest practice. The workshop will draw upon the experience of public interest lawyers, scholarship on public interest law, and expert narratives.

The workshop seeks to enhance the skill set of legal professionals and provide a greater understanding of how legal and non-legal strategies can effectively combine to initiate social transformation.

This is a closed, in-person workshop open to the first 25 participants. It will commence at 9 a.m. on June 1, 2024, and conclude at 2 p.m. on June 2, 2024.

The workshop fee includes lunch on both days and refreshments. As this is a non-residential programme, there will be no on-campus accommodation. The schedule of the workshop will be shared with the participants closer to the workshop’s date.
