July,6,2016:

Advocate was convicted for threatening a sitting District Court Judge.

The Supreme Court has observed that Legal profession is the most important component of justice delivery system.

On account of this it must continue to perform the significant role in administering Justice. However in order to keep itself aboveboard it shall have a updated regulatory mechanism. Bar should not be seen to be wanting in taking prompt action and deciding against any malpractice reported to it.

Apex Court held that there is an urgent need to review the old provisions of the Advocates Act which deal with regulatory mechanism for the legal profession.

The Three Judge Bench comprising of Justices Anil R. Dave, Kurian Joseph and Adarsh Kumar Goel has made a request the Law Commission  of India and Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India to take appropriate steps in this regard.

The remarks were made in case titled Mahipal Singh Rana vs. State of Uttar Pradesh decided yesterday.

Appeal was made by a practicing Advocate against Allahabad High Court order convicting him after he was found guilty of Criminal Contempt for intimidating and threatening a sitting Civil Judge in UP.
