More than 6 Lakh fake Lawyers waiting to become Judges, Standing Counsels and Law Officers

Almost half of the lawyers roaming across court corridors in India are fake, suggests Bar Council of India’s two-year-old verification drive.

BCI Chief Manan Kumar Mishra announced before the Chief Justice of India J S Khehar and other Senior Supreme Court judges that its ongoing drive had already cut number of the genuine lawyers to 55-60% of those roaming in the court corridors across the country.

BCI Chief while citing the figures stated that,“As per the 2012 Election Statistics of BCI, we had almost 14 lakh voters, but since this verification process has started, we have received only 6.5 lakh applications.“

Voters are the lawyers who are enrolled with the various State Bar Councils to practice law in respective trial courts and State's High Court.

Former Delhi Law Minister in AAP Government is being tried in court on the charges of possessing a fake law degree.

Bar Council of India's Certificate and Place of Practice (Verification) Rules 2015 was one of the  steps which were taken by it to filter the fake, non-practising and bad elements from the court campuses and the Bar Associations.

Amidst the growing concerns about possibility of the fake lawyers practising in the courtrooms, legal experts fear such situation could undermine dispensation of the justice and lead to unprecedented legal crisis.
