Former DGP of Punjab KPS Gill, who is credited with wiping out the militancy in Punjab, passed away after suffering cardiac arrest in Delhi on Thursday afternoon.
He was admitted to the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here after he was diagnosed with the end stage kidney failure and the significant Ischemic Heart Disease.
He had served twice as the DGP in Punjab before retiring from the force in the year 1995. He was subsequently appointed as President of Indian Hockey Federation (IHF).
Dubbed as the "supercop" by media for his crackdown on the Khalistani terrorists, Gill was awarded Padma Shri, India's Fourth Highest Civilian Honour, in the year 1989 for his work in the civil service.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences at Mr. Gill's demise.
"KPS Gill will be remembered for his service to our nation in fields of policing and security. Pained by his demise. My condolences," said PM Modi in his tweet.
