Dubai-based Indian Billionaire to pay for expat Jail Prisoner's Air Tickets to home

The assigned Fund will help inmates who cannot afford to pay for their airfare to travel back home.

Dubai-based Indian billionaire will donate $130,790 a year to fund return tickets of the expatriate prisoners who've been released from the jails in UAE to reunite them with their families.

Firoz Merchant who is the founder & chairperson of Pure Gold Jewellers, has signed a memorandum of understanding with UAE's Faraj Fund, which is a charity initiative which seeks to promote the welfare of the inmates in the country.

'Pure Gold Jewellers' is a jeweler retailer with 120 stores across Middle East, in UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, KSA, Jordan, Sri Lanka & 200 stores in India.

Company's stores sell a variety of jewelry in gold, platinum, diamonds, Murano glass & precious stones. Founded by Indian expatriate Firoz Merchant in year 1989, the 1st Pure Gold Jewellers store was opened in Dubai.

Faraj Fund was established in Abu Dhabi, in June 2009, through a decree issued by Minister of Social Affairs.

The Mumbai-born businessman who has an ongoing initiative to help in clearing the debts of the expatriates who land in jail; has just secured release of 132 prisoners by paying off their combined borrowings worth Dh 150,000.

The merchant  said that "These prisoners are victims of circumstances & aren't real criminals, they are in jail because of debt."

 

Merchant said that "In unity with the Year of Giving initiative, we're working with prison & law enforcement authorities to help the insolvent prisoners, as well as members of police force who work hard to ensure that we continue to live in a happy & secure community."
