Batch of 65 Obsolete Laws to be repealed soon by Parliament

A Bill intending to repeal 65 laws which are either obsolete or have become redundant due to operation of other laws has been introduced in Parliament.

Union Law Minister, Kiren Rijiju, in the ongoing winter session has brought up Repealing and Amending Bill, 2022 in the Lok Sabha.

It contains three schedules:

-First Schedule lists 24 laws enacted between the years 1885 and 2020 which it intends to repeal,

-Second Schedule lists 41 Appropriation Acts enacted between the years 2013 and 2017 to be repealed, and

-Third Schedule lists 1 Act which shall be amended

The List under First Schedule contains names of Land Acquisition (Mines) Act, 1885, the Sugarcane Act, 1934, the Telegraph Wires (Unlawful Possession) Act, 1950, the Metal Corporation of India (Acquisition of Undertaking) Act, 1965 and the Coal Mines (Conservation and Development) Act, 1974, among others.

Out of the 24 Laws, 16 Amendment Acts already stands repealed.

The names include Companies (Amendment) Act, 2017, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Act, 2018, the Personal Laws (Amendment) Act, 2019, the Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Act, 2019 and the Right to Information (Amendment) Act, 2019, among others.

Notably, in the third Schedule scope to remedy minor legal drafting errors in the Factoring Regulation Act, 2011 has been proposed. It intends to replace "that Central Government" with "that Government" in Section 31A (3) of the Act.
