How to apply for Supreme Court Bar Association Membership (SCBA)? By: Ritu Rajkumari

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) membership is required to use various facilities including Library Access inside the premises of Supreme Court of India.

These are steps to enroll as an “Temporary Member” of the Supreme Court Bar Association Membership (SCBA).

Step 1: Obtain the ‘Admission Application form’ from the Office of Supreme Court Bar Association for a sum of INR 1000/- payable by Demand Draft in favour of “Supreme Court Bar Association”.

Step 2: Fill the S.C.B.A. Admission Application Form + Library Membership Form + S.C.B.A. Identity Card form + Proximity Card Form (its free for first time applicants)

The completely filled form shall be accompanied by the following key documents and items:

1. Notarized Photocopy of LL. B Degree or Provisional Certificate in lieu of Degree.
2. Notarized Photocopy of the Enrolment Certificate issued by respective State Bar Council.
3. Notarized Photocopy of the Residence Proof.
4. No dues certificate along with certificate of character & conduct of the concerned Bar Association of which the applicant is member. (if any)
5. Notarized Photocopy of All India Bar Examination Certificate (COP) issued by the Bar Council of India. (for applicants who have graduated LL.B. after 2010)
6. Six Passport Size Photographs.
7. Affidavit (On a ten Rupees Non-Judicial Stamp Paper from Notary) describing that ‘No Criminal/Contempt Case’ is pending against the applicant in any court of law in India or abroad, nor involved in such case.
8. Two Recommendation Letters from members who have not less than 10 years of standing in SCBA:
   1. Proposer
   2. First Seconder

Note: The format of these recommendation letters is available with Advocates who are the member of S.C.B.A.

9. Signatures of nine other ‘Seconders’ over the Admission Form who have not less than 5 years of standing in SCBA. (Name, Address, Signature and SCBA Membership No.)
10. Demand Draft of Admission Fee:
    1. Advocate having less than 10 years of practice – Rs. 10,400/-
    2. Advocate having more than 10 years of practice – Rs. 12,900/-
    3. Designated Senior Advocate – Rs. 27,400/-
11. In case of Chamber Address: Allotment Letter of concern court/ authority letter of Chamber allottee must be attached along with admission form.

Step 3: Submit the completed form at S.C.B.A. Office. Don’t forget to take the receipts.

Congratulations, now wait for 2-3 months.

You will receive a letter from S.C.B.A regarding the date of “Interaction/Interview” that will be conducted to admit you finally as temporary member.

For the Interaction/Interview, you need the Original Documents such as your Enrolment Certificate, your LLB Degree, your COP (Certificate of Practice), Original Identity cum Residency Proof that you had attached in the form.
