On Friday, a 43-year-old man who had come to depose as a witness in the murder case of his wife was shot dead by 2 unidentified armed men on a motorcycle in the Sonipat Court Complex. The victim has been identified as Ved Prakash, a resident of Mukimpur village of Sonipat district of Haryana.
Police said, his wife Kanika, whom he had married against her parents’ wishes, was allegedly murdered by her father Vijaypal in July 2021. Her body was allegedly thrown into a canal in Meerut & Vijaypal was arrested & sent to judicial custody after the registration of a case.
Ved Prakash had come to depose as a witness in the murder case. The assailants gunned him down at 10.15 am when he was waiting near Advocate's chamber No. 207, & he died on the spot. The murder was captured on CCTV cameras.
Sources said that since Ved & Kanika — aged 18 when she was killed — were from the same village & there was a big age difference between them, her parents were against their match & she was allegedly strangled to death & her body was thrown into a canal.
Cops said a murder case has been registered against 2 unidentified persons & 2 others who are believed to be the main conspirators. The victim’s body has been sent to Khanpur medical college for postmortem. The Advocates flagged the issue of their safety after the murder inside the court complex & suspended their work. Talking to the media, Sonipat SP Himanshu Garg assured that security would be strengthened at the court complex.
