SC Bench comprising of Five-Judge Constitution Bench headed by the CJI JS Khehar had reserved its verdict on May 18,2017 after a six-day marathon hearing during summer vacation.
The Supreme Court will tomorrow pronounce landmark judgment on the controversial issue of Whether practice of 'Triple Talaq' among the Muslims is a fundamental to religion or not.
Court had clarified that it may not deliberate upon the issue of the polygamy and stated that it would only examine whether the triple talaq was part of an "enforceable" fundamental right to practice religion by Muslims.
Bench also comprised of Justice Kurian Joseph, Justice R F Nariman, Justice U U Lalit and Justice S Abdul Nazeer.
Apex Court Bench, comprised of judges from the different religious communities had heard the seven pleas, including five separate petitions filed by the Muslim women challenging prevalent practice of 'triple talaq' in community.
Petitioners had claimed that practice of the 'triple talaq' was unconstitutional.
Muslim women, had filed petitions, have challenged practice of 'triple talaq' in which husband pronounces 'talaq' thrice in one go, sometimes even by the phone or text message, to get a divorce.
