On Sunday, in a disturbing incident reflecting an attempt to intimidate the judiciary, three persons were arrested in Madhya Pradesh for allegedly attacking the residence of a Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) and Civil Judge, purportedly in retaliation for a prior bail rejection.
According to the complaint lodged by Judicial Magistrate Amandeep Singh Chhabra, the incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday when a group of individuals “damaged property, including a lamp at the gate and iron fixtures, before pelting stones into the courtyard” of his government accommodation located in Bhalumada, nearly 35 km from the district headquarters. The judge came out of the house upon hearing the commotion, prompting the assailants to flee the scene.
Superintendent of Police Moti-ur Rehman described the episode as “an attack to take revenge,” explaining that “the magistrate had turned down the bail application of one of the accused five to six months ago.”
Kotma Police Station House Officer Sanjay Khalko identified the arrested accused as Priyanshu Singh alias Jaguar, Devendra Kewat, and Manikesh Singh, all residents of Bhalumada. He stated that the trio “pelted stones and verbally abused the judge outside his government accommodation late at night, creating panic in the area.” He further added that all three were intoxicated at the time of the incident and that “main accused Priyanshu Singh is a habitual offender with several cases registered against him.”
Following the attack, law enforcement conducted raids across multiple locations and apprehended the accused. The Anuppur Principal District and Sessions Judge, Maya Vishwalal, subsequently visited the JMFC’s residence on the direction of the Registrar General of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
The three accused have been booked under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 224, Section 296, Section 324, Section 331(6), Section 333, Section 351(3).
