People often organise wedding ceremonies according to various religious customs, inviting friends & relatives. Two feasts are typically held, & everyone extends their blessings to the newlyweds. However, neither the bride, groom, nor any relatives are needed for the marriage registration process in Kerala.
The state government has introduced a system where the couple does not need to appear before a magistrate. Moreover, the bride & groom do not need to be together at the same time for the registration. Marriages can now be registered through video KYC.
Kerala Government’s Initiative
MB Rajesh, a minister in the Kerala government, announced this initiative. He stated that the ‘K Smart Project’ has been operational since 2024, benefiting a third of new couples. In a Facebook post, he noted that Kerala is the first state in the country to enable marriage registration through video KYC.
So far, 21,344 individuals have utilised this online facility in Kerala’s cities. From January 2024 to March 31, 2025, one-third of the 63,001 marriages used this system. According to the minister, Kerala is making significant strides with the ‘K Smart Project’.
K Smart Project
The K Smart project allows marriage registration via online video KYC, enabling the bride & groom to register from anywhere globally. Minister MB Rajesh explained that this scheme does not require the couple to be present at the same place or online simultaneously. Marriage registration can be completed through video KYC.
In Delhi, the facility for online booking of marriage registration was introduced during the Aam Aadmi Party government’s tenure. After a payment, a government representative verifies the documents at home & books the registration date.
However, the bride, groom, & two witnesses must still appear before the SDM for the final registration. On the booking day, the couple often has to stand in line for hours. In such a situation, the Kerala government’s initiative, where couples don’t need to appear before a magistrate, is a commendable effort towards simplifying the process.
