The Telangana Advocates Protection Act, 2026, came into force on June 2, 2026, after the State government issued the necessary notification. The legislation establishes legal safeguards for advocates facing threats, violence, harassment, or false implication in cases, marking one of the most comprehensive statutory protection frameworks for lawyers in the country.
The law was enacted following concerns within the legal community over increasing incidents of intimidation and attacks on advocates during the discharge of their professional duties. Passed by the Telangana Legislative Assembly earlier this year, the legislation was shaped through consultations involving the Bar Council of Telangana, High Court bar associations, legal forums, and members of the Bar.
The Act seeks to provide advocates with access to police protection, protection against false cases, and a dedicated mechanism to address grievances arising from threats, obstruction, or harassment connected with their professional work.
While this is a legislative measure rather than a judicial order, the State government formally operationalised the statute through a notification issued by the Law Department. The notification stated, “Government hereby appoint the 2nd day of June, 2026, as the date on which the provisions of the said Act, shall come into force.” The legislation is intended to strengthen the security of advocates and provide a statutory avenue for addressing incidents that interfere with the independent discharge of legal duties.
With the notification taking effect, advocates in Telangana can now invoke the protections and remedies contemplated under the Act.
