The Supreme Court will hear the petition which seeks direction to declare that the cow vigilantes are “extortionists” and also asking government to put an end to the atrocities which are committed against the Dalits and other minorities.

This petition comes after PM Narendra Modi said that the anti-social elements under the garb of gau rakshaks were spreading violence against down-trodden and also destroying the delicate social fabric of the society.

PIL is filed Entrepreneur and Activist Tehseen S. Poonawalla who enunciated that the Dalits who were attacked at Una were doing their traditional work of skinning already dead cows to provide leather to tanneries. the menace caused by these so called Cow protection groups was spreading to each and every corner of the country leading to destruction so the harmony among the various communities of the society.

The Petition also points how some of the State governments even provide the cow vigilantes with the identity cards.
Gujarat Animal Prevention Act, 1956 some other State Laws, provide that those who act to protect the cows are deemed to be public servants and thus no legal action should be instituted against them, the Petition provided.
