On Sunday, the Serum Institute of India issued a statement regarding a participant in its COVID vaccine trial falling seriously ill during the trial saying that “there is absolutely no correlation with the vaccine trial & the medical condition of the volunteer”.
Describing the allegations in the legal notice sent by the family of the participant as “malicious & misconceived”, the statement stated while the company was sympathetic with the volunteer’s medical condition, he was “falsely laying the blame for his medical problems on the vaccine trial”.
Saying that the trial participant had been specifically informed by the medical team that the complications he suffered were independent of the vaccine trial, the company claimed that the volunteer’s going public despite this was “for oblique pecuniary motive”. It added that it would seek damages in excess of Rs 100 crore.
However, the Serum Institute statement didn't say anything about why the company itself had not made the occurrence of an adverse event during the trial public.
The Drugs Controller General of India & the institutional ethics committee are investigating if the adverse event as alleged to have been suffered by a Covid-19 vaccine trial participant in Chennai are related to the shot administered to him.
A 40-year-old business consultant has sought Rs 5 crore compensation for allegedly suffering serious neurological & psychological symptoms after taking the dose.
