Today, the Supreme Court resumed hearing the bail pleas of several accused in the 2020 Delhi riots larger conspiracy case, including Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, and Shifa-ur-Rehman.

A bench comprising Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice N.V. Anjaria is presiding over the matter. The Delhi Police has opposed the grant of bail, alleging that the petitioners are “playing the victim card” after deliberately causing delays in the trial proceedings.

On Friday, the Court had heard arguments on behalf of Umar Khalid, Gulfisha Fatima, and Sharjeel Imam. Today, the bench is scheduled to hear submissions concerning the remaining accused, Meeran Haider and Shifa-ur-Rehman, along with the response from the Delhi Police.

During the hearing, Senior Advocate Salman Khurshid, appearing for the petitioners, submitted that the defense would take about ten minutes per accused. Justice Aravind Kumar noted that the Court was dealing with multiple bail matters ranging from cases pending for two to eighteen years, emphasizing that efforts were being made to manage the schedule efficiently.

The matter was initially slated for 2 PM, but following coordination issues with Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, it was agreed that the case would be taken up around 2:30 PM.

The hearing continues.
