On Friday, marking the culmination of Chief Justice of India BR Gavai’s tenure, the Supreme Court released an official document detailing all Collegium recommendations made during his term. Issued a day before his retirement, the publication compiles the appointments proposed to various High Courts and outlines the social composition of the recommended candidates, continuing the transparency practice initiated under former CJI Sanjiv Khanna.

According to the document, the Supreme Court Collegium made 129 recommendations for High Court judgeships from May 14, the day Justice Gavai assumed office as Chief Justice of India. Of these, the Union Government approved 93 names. The compilation also records the social backgrounds of the candidates, reflecting representation across several categories.

It shows that 11 candidates belonged to Other Backward Classes/Backward Classes, 10 were from Scheduled Castes, and 13 were from minority communities. It further notes that 15 women were recommended, and 5 candidates were related to sitting or retired judges.
