On Wednesday, Congress President Rahul Gandhi tendered unconditional apology to the Supreme Court for "unintentionally" and "inadvertently" linking the Apex Court order in Rafale review plea to his "cowkidar chor hai" political jibe against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Ahead of the Friday hearing, Rahul filed a three-page affidavit rendering unconditional apology and requesting the top court to close the contempt proceedings initiated on the basis of a petition filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi.
Rahul had in his earlier affidavit expressed "regret" for linking SC order of April 10 to his political jibe against PM Modi.
"You can run but you can’t hide! Rahul Gandhi finally apologises to the SC for his irresponsible remarks. Justice is a great leveller and Pinocchio’s story is a great reminder! #maafkarosarkar," Lekhi took a dig at the Congress president in a tweet after the latter's "unconditional apology".
The apex court is scheduled to hear the contempt petition against the Congress president for wrongly attributing to the court the "chowkidar chor hai" remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A special bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said the petitions seeking review of its Dec 14 verdict of last year on the Rafale defence deal will also come up for hearing on May 10.
Rahul had made the contemptuous remark, "chowkidar chor hai", against Modi, which the apex court had said was wrongly attributed to it.
The top court had on April 30 given another opportunity to Rahul for filing one more affidavit for his remark.
Though Rahul, through his counsel, admitted that he made a mistake by wrongly attributing the remark to the Supreme Court, it observed that in the affidavit filed earlier, at one point the Congress president admitted the mistake and at one point denied making contemptuous remarks.
