A Public Interest Litigation (hereinafter referred to as “PIL”) has been filed in the Bombay High Court, seeking a ban on the online gambling platforms ‘Jungle Rummy’ and ‘Rummy Circle’.
The petition filed by Ganesh Ranu Nanaware, a social worker from Solapur, calls on the Maharastra Government to take quick action against these apps due to their negative impact, particularly on youngsters. Ganesh Ranu Nanaware had already made unsuccessful appeals to several high-level officials, including the President of India and the Prime Minister’s Office, motivating his decision to go to court.
The Plea contends that these apps are addictive, resulting in enormous financial losses and even suicides. It alleges that they infringed many laws, including the Public Gambling Act of 1867, the Bombay Prevention of Gambling Act of 1887 and the Information Technology Act of 2000. The plea also includes a response from the Maharashtra government which confirms that no permit was issued for these gambling activities.
Further, the petition highlights the role of celebrity endorsements in promoting these apps and the need for more response from Google India Pvt. Ltd., which continues to host the platforms despite legal notices. Ganesh Ranu Nanaware seeks a court order to ban the apps and halt Google India’s server support.
