Recently, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar proposed lowering the legal age for defining a ‘juvenile’ in criminal cases from 18 to 14 years. Addressing the media in Baramati, Pune. Pawar stressed the need for legal reforms, citing the rising involvement of minors in serious crimes. He also indicated plans to discuss the matter with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Pawar’s remarks were prompted by a recent case in Baramati where two 17-year-old college students allegedly hacked their friend's death. He noted that, under current law, severe punishment can only be imposed if the accused is above 18. Pawar also referenced an earlier incident involving a 17-year-old who fatally ran over two people while driving a Porsche in Pune.

Pawar emphasized that societal changes and increased awareness among today’s youth require a reevaluation of the age threshold for criminal responsibility. He stated that many officials believe that lowering the juvenile age to 14 is essential, given the growing involvement of 15-17-year-olds in criminal activities. According to him, these minors are often aware of their ability to evade strict punishment due to their age. Pawar intends to formally raise this issue with the Centre during future lawmaking discussions.
