The Madras High Court continues to shake up the political landscape by revisiting controversial decisions related to corruption cases involving prominent political figures. Justice N. Anand Venkatesh, the presiding judge, has embarked on a review of a 2012 court order that discharged former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam in a disproportionate assets case. This move comes in the wake of similar actions involving ministers from both the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

Justice Venkatesh's decision to revisit the discharge order comes shortly after allegations from DMK's organising secretary RS Bharati, who criticized the judge for selectively choosing cases involving DMK leaders for revision while leaving out cases involving AIADMK leaders. In response to these allegations, the judge has expanded his review to include cases concerning AIADMK members.

The judge's proactive stance began with the revision of orders that acquitted or discharged DMK ministers KKSSR Ramachandran and Thangam Thennarasu in separate disproportionate assets cases originally filed by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) during the AIADMK regime. The district court later discharged them from these cases.

KKSSR Ramachandran, the current revenue minister in the Tamil Nadu government, was acquitted in July 2023 in a case filed against him in 2011. Likewise, in December 2022, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu and his wife were discharged in a 2012 disproportionate assets case related to Thennarasu's tenure as the school education minister in the DMK government from 2006 to 2011.

In addition, Justice Venkatesh also initiated a review of the acquittal of Tamil Nadu minister K Ponmudy and his wife in a disproportionate assets case decided by a Vellore court in June. The judge expressed his concern about ensuring that the judicial process remains unbiased and impartial, emphasizing the importance of avoiding any perception that the judge is taking sides in these politically charged cases.

The recent decision to reexamine the 2012 discharge order for O Panneerselvam, a former chief minister and prominent AIADMK leader, indicates the High Court's commitment to scrutinizing cases of potential corruption without favouring any political group. The review's outcome is keenly anticipated, given the broader implications for political accountability and justice.
