The Supreme Court Collegium dated 12-02-2020 had recommended the transfer of beloved Delhi High Court Judge, Justice S Murlidhar to Punjab and Haryana High Court. 

The Central Government notified his transfer on 27-02-2020 after which, today he bid farewell to the Delhi High Court. 

The Delhi High Court Bar Association commenced the farewell ceremony with Chief Justice DN Patel observing:

"We are losing a most eminent Judge who can discuss any topic of law and decide any type of matter" 

Secretary of the Delhi High Court Bar Association, Abhijat announced him as the "Kohinoor" of the High Court and that he would be "only going a few 100 kilometers away."

Justice Muralidhar begins with his farewell address, by stating that it was unbelievably ironic that he became part of the Delhi High Court family.

"Coming to this court was an unbelievable irony."

He then shared his story of how he discovered Law as his profession and career and that it was not meant that way in the beginning.  

"I was not meant to do law. I used to play cricket with the son of a lawyer and I used to leave my cricket bag in his chambers. I had signed up for MSC."

He remembered his representation of the Bhopal gas tragedy case. He recounted how the issue of whether the interest on the compensation paid to victims should also have gone to victims had to be re-argued multiple times before various Benches.

Praising Justice Krishna Iyer for putting the case to rest when presented before him, he said:

"Within 10 minutes of the matter being heard, Justice Krishna Iyer decided."

Discussing his relations and connections with the young Lawyers, he highlighted how he appreciates when they come well-prepared to argue.

"Youngsters may have seen me irritated when they come to my court without any paper and just an appearance slip - I want juniors to come prepared and seize opportunities to argue."

He then brought the attention of the attendees to the fact that how keeping faith in the Justice System is important for everyone.

“When justice has to triumph, it will triumph ... Be with the truth - Justice will be done."

He ended his address on a lighter note by saying:

"Last week a young lawyer came and asked me - sir do you dye - inquiring about my hair- and I responded saying one day everyone has to but for now I’m ready to take charge at the Punjab & Haryana High Court."

The President of the Delhi High Court Bar Association, Mohit Matur praised Justice Muralidhar by telling everyone that he was an exceptional junior at G Ramaswamy's chamber.

The vote of thanks was rendered by the Vice President of the Delhi High Court Bar Association.

He concluded the farewell ceremony with words:

 "This spectacular farewell is our answer to those asking what would Bar do now that the Collegium's recommendation has been accepted by the Centre."
