On Wednesday, the Patna High Court ordered the Congress party to take down an AI-generated video featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother, Heeraben Modi, which had been shared by the party’s Bihar unit on social media.
Acting Chief Justice PB Bajantri instructed the party to remove the video from all online platforms. The video depicted PM Modi in a dream sequence where his late mother allegedly criticizes his political actions in poll-bound Bihar. Its circulation drew widespread criticism, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies labeling the content as a "shameful" attempt to target the Prime Minister. The Congress, however, maintained that no disrespect was intended toward PM Modi or his late mother.
Following the video’s release, the Delhi Police registered a case on September 13 against the Congress and its IT cell, based on a complaint by BJP Delhi Election Cell convenor Sanket Gupta. The complaint alleged that the visuals were defamatory and offended the dignity of PM Modi’s mother as well as motherhood in general.
This is not the first instance of the Congress facing backlash over content involving PM Modi and his mother. Earlier, a video from the Congress-led Voter Adhikar Yatra in Darbhanga went viral, showing an individual directing abuses at the Prime Minister and his late mother. Responding to that incident, Modi described the act as "unimaginable" and an insult to all mothers, sisters, and daughters of the country. He also questioned why his mother, who had no political involvement, was being dragged into partisan disputes.
