A 78-year-old woman, who ignorantly transferred her agricultural land worth lakhs of rupees to her 2 sons only to be thrown out of the house later, has managed to get it back after a 2-year-old legal battle.
Yellavva was married to Dharmagouda Patil, a resident of Chikkahullala village in Haveri district. While her life was going smoothly, Dharmagouda died in 2011, after registering 6.2 acres in her name.
According to Dharmagouda’s will, the property had to be divided between his 2 sons & two daughters after the death of Yellavva.
While Yellavva continued to live in her village, her 2 sons hatched a plan to take away the agricultural land. In 2014-15, when Yellavva was unwell, her children conned her into registering the land in their name. A few days after the registration, the sons started assaulting her & threw her out of the house. Once the owner of a piece of agricultural land, Yellavva was reduced to a destitute with no shelter or food.
With nowhere to go, Yellavva landed at Dhwani Swadher Grih, an NGO established for destitute women in association with department of woman & child development in Haveri. NGO head Parimala Jain came to her rescue by asking her to file a case with the assistant commissioner under the Maintenance & Welfare of Parents & Senior Citizens Act. After filing a complaint, in Feb 2019, the senior citizen's welfare board asked both the sons to pay Rs 5,000 each to Yellavva. But as her sons didn't provide her financial support, Yellavva again approached the Govt.
Yellavva’s husband was the village head, & everyone respected her, Parimala Jain told the news agency..
She said that “She was known for providing shelter to many poor farmers & helped many women during pregnancy. But it was heart-wrenching to see her plight. When we checked, we found out that one of her sons had Rs 22 lakh loan which he spent on gambling & alcohol".
