The Delhi High Court has granted interim bail to four co-owners of the coaching centre basement in Old Rajinder Nagar, where a tragic drowning incident claimed the lives of three IAS aspirants. The interim bail is effective until January 30, with the court mandating the co-owners to deposit ₹5 crore with the Red Cross. Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma criticized the co-owners for their decision to lease out the basement, describing it as an act of greed that contributed to the incident.
The court also directed the lieutenant governor to establish a committee, chaired by a retired high court judge, to ensure that coaching centres operate only with proper approvals and to designate appropriate locations for these institutions. The drowning occurred on July 27 when heavy rains flooded the basement of Rau's IAS Study Circle, resulting in the deaths of Shreya Yadav (25), Tanya Soni (25), and Nevin Delvin (24). The co-owners—Parvinder Singh, Tajinder Singh, Harvinder Singh, and Sarbjit Singh—contend that they are not responsible for the tragedy as they were merely landlords renting the basement.
The CBI opposed the bail, citing that the investigation is still in the early stages and arguing that bail should not be granted until all independent witnesses are examined.
