In a bid to streamline governance processes and improve administrative efficiency, the Assam government has announced the re-designation of the post of "Deputy Commissioner" as "District Commissioner" with immediate effect.

The decision, approved by the Governor of Assam, aims to bring clarity and cohesion to the roles and responsibilities associated with the position. The change in nomenclature reflects the expanded duties and authority of the District Commissioner (DC) while retaining the familiar abbreviation "DC".

Under the new designation, DCs will now have the power to transfer both gazetted and non-gazetted officers, including those in the 4th and 3rd grades, within their respective districts. However, the transfer of gazetted officers will require approval from the concerned guardian minister.

Additionally, the statutory powers previously held by the Divisional Commissioner's office will be transferred to the Principal Secretary of the General Administrative Department. This reallocation aims to streamline administrative processes and ensure efficient governance.

The Assam government's decision to re-designate the post reflects its commitment to enhancing administrative expediency and providing effective public service. All stakeholders, government departments, and agencies are urged to update their records and official communications to reflect the new designation of "District Commissioner" following the recent announcement.
