This is an exciting internship with ILGA, the world association of more than 1,300 LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex) members organizations. The intern will assist ILGA’s Senior Research Officer, with a focus on the State-Sponsored Homophobia report. It is an excellent opportunity for anyone in the initial stage of their career with an interest in research, human rights and SOGIESC issues and wants to gain working experience.This is a virtual internship. The intern can be based anywhere in the world with a good internet connection. The exact working hours and dates can be flexible, but a candidate should be available to work full-time (37.5 hours/week).
Main Tasks
- Assisting ILGA’s Senior Research Officer in conducting desktop research on legal issues regarding human rights and sexual orientation, especially for the production of the State-Sponsored Homophobia report.
- Conducting desktop research on other issues related to SOGIESC relevant to ILGA’s research program;
- Preparing and drafting background notes and briefs;
- Assisting ILGA’s Senior Research Office in editing and proofreading research products;
- Managing, organizing and maintaining an internal database;
- Convening and moderating meetings with contributors, translators, designers, and other partners, and following up on their work with ILGA;
- Carrying out organizational and administrative tasks to support research needs.
Main requirements
- Strong research skills on legal issues related to SOGIESC and human rights;
- Ability to independently conduct complex legal issues and present research findings in an organized and methodical manner. High level of attention to detail and accuracy;
- Awareness of the cultural nuances and community developments in language and concepts relating to sexual orientation and around gender issues;
- Experience in activism with regard to SOGIESC issues;
- Proficiency in handling substantial amounts of research of data. Organized and methodical data management, updating and storage; Basic knowledge of citation methods;
- Competency in working with partners: building and nurturing key relationships;
- Fluency in English, both written and oral. Fluency in Spanish and French are also highly desirable. Other languages, especially UN languages, are an asset;
- Good internet connection during the internship.
Preferably also
- Previous experience in paid or non-paid legal research work;
- Knowledge of international human rights law;
- Previous experience using reference management software (e.g. Mendeley);
- Participation or authorship in one or more legal publications, preferably on SOGIESC issues;
- A degree in a relevant field.
