Metro ride is Delhi is second-most unaffordable in the world, according to a study conducted by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has found that after the fare hike last year.
Delhi metro has become the 2nd unaffordable service in the world among the cities that charge less than half a US dollar for a trip.
"Of 9 metropolitan cities across the world where the cost for a 10-km trip is less than half-a-US dollar, the Delhi Metro remains the second-most unaffordable system in terms of percentage of income spent for using it," the study said.
As per calculation, the study says that commuters in Delhi spends about 14% of its income on Metro rides that's lower only to 25% spent by commuters in Hanoi, Vietnam.
According to the study, an unskilled daily-wage laborer in Delhi spends an average 8% of his income by travelling on a non-AC bus, 14% for an AC bus & 22% on the Delhi Metro.
However, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has simply rejected the findings saying that the study is selective & has only compared smaller Metro networks. The study also found that the ridership has also dropped 32% in comparison to the numbers it had hoped to serve this year due to fare hikes last year. The study said the ridership dropped approximately by 4.2 lakh passengers in 2018 as compared to the previous year.
While the average daily ridership projections made by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in 2016 stood at around 40 lakh for this year, it has been only around 27 lakh - 31.66% less than the projections, the study said.
