July 31,2018:
“Kiki do you love me”, which is catchline of Rapper Drake’s song, has cops in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh on its toes.
The Police in both the States is sending out the worried tweets and advisories.
The track has already gathered nearly 82 million views on YouTube and has prompted a potentially dangerous social media dance challenge which requires the performer to shake and shimmy beside a moving car and then jump back into it.
In a cheeky play on the lyrics, UP police tweeted on Monday, “Dear Parents, whether Kiki loves your child or not, we are sure you do! So please stand by your kids in all the challenges in life except #kikichallenge.
Chandigarh Traffic Police, in association with Radio Mirchi, has issued a traffic advisory on the dare. So did Mumbai police last week. ”Desist from public nuisance or face the music!,” it tweeted. Cops in Spain, the US, Malaysia and the UAE have also alerted people to the dangers of the challenge.
“Kiki do you love me” is the refrain of a popular number, “In my feelings”. The song is written by Drake, a 31-year-old Toronto-born musician.
In Punjab, the video has been widely circulated on WhatsApp. Local versions of the challenge have been uploaded on sites like Instagram with hashtags, such as #punjabikiki, #shiggychallenge, #bhangra, #bds, #desikiki #kikidoyouloveme #dotheshiggy and #drake. In some videos, youngsters can be seen shaking a leg to Punjabi versions.
Patiala-based Dr Damanjit Sandhu, President, Indian Association of Mental Health Counsellors has stated that adolescents are vulnerable to such online challenges.
The #kikichallenge craze began on June 30 when comedian Shiggy posted a video on Instagram where he is dancing to the song in a busy stretch. Later Shiggy’s friend Odell Beckham Jr also recorded himself dancing outside his car.
Now there are hundreds of such videos. Some of them show people crashing into poles and tripping on the potholes. In one clip a woman’s handbag is stolen while attempting the challenge. In India, Bollywood and TV actors such as Nora Fatehi, Adah Sharma and Priyank Sharma have filmed themselves dancing to Drake’s song outside a moving car.
World Health Organisation statistics show over 3,000 adolescents die in road traffic injuries every day totaling 1.2 million deaths a year worldwide.
