Hima Das has been on a major winning streak at international arenas, & just scored her third gold at the Kladno Memorial Athletics Meet in at Kladno, Czech Republic on Saturday. It has recently been known that the 19-year-old star athlete has donated half of her monthly salary towards her home state Assam, to aid the flood relief fund--yet another awe-inducing move by the sprint champion!

Hima, who is also known as the “Dhing Express”, scored big in her last race with an astonishing record of 23.43 seconds. Despite suffering from a sore back, Hima has proven her mettle--first, at the Poznan Athletics Grand Prix, her second at the Kutno Athletics Meetalso (both in Poland), followed by this. Even though her sportsmanship is fierce & highly inspiring, what is surely worth some focus right now is her compassion & spirit to reach out to those in need, all in the midst of her moments of glory.

The star sprinter, who is currently in Europe, undergoing training & attending competitive meets, deposited half of her salary to the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, yesterday. Her donation was from the money Hima receives from the Indian Oil Corporation, where she is an HR officer. Taking to Twitter to share the news & urging people to contribute, Hima wrote: “I have contributed my bit & requesting others also to please help people of Assam. #AssamFloods”

The situation in Assam The massive downpour in Assam which lead to a terrifying flood, has left lakhs of people displaced, & have taken the lives of more than 20. Apart from inundating the National Highway 37, this has affected over 200 villages in Morigaon district, due to uncontrollable overflow of the Brahmaputra river. Furthermore, more than 90% of Kaziranga National Park is reportedly suffering damage from the floods.

Hima has always shown a peaking interest in social welfare, & is also known to have led a campaign against social ills like illicit liquor dens in her local area. She was also elected as the sports secretary of the local unit of Aasu, a regional party in Assam. With her unstoppable grit, this girl is truly the pride of India.
