A vegetable vendor caught on Friday noon for helmetless riding at Madiwala police station junction had to leave behind his scooter as it was found he had been challaned 77 times since May and was unable to pay the fine amount of Rs 42,500 for the violations.

According to traffic police, the violator is Arun Kumar, 30, of Madiwala. Police said he had purchased a used scooter (Honda Dio) last year and most of the violations pertained to riding without helmet, defective number plate and violating lane discipline.

"Sub-inspector Shivarajkumar Angadi and his team were deployed at Madiwala police station junction for enforcement. They found Kumar riding his scooter without helmet. They stopped him and entered the registration number of the vehicle on their device to check his previous violations.

Cops found he had committed 77 violations and the fine he had to pay totalled Rs 42,500.

The rider was unable to pay the hefty amount and sought permission to arrange money. We seized the vehicle," a police officer said.

Kumar will now have to pay the penalty in court to get back his scooter. According to police, the value of the seized vehicle is much lower than the fine amount.
