About the Centre

The Centre for Artificial Intelligence, Law & Society (CAILS) established under the aegis of the Institute of Legal Studies, GLA University, Mathura aims to facilitate discussion on issues at the intersection of Law and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on society.

 

About the Opportunity

AI today is being used by administrators of law (judges, legislators, govt. officials, regulators, police), practitioners of law (Attorneys in litigation, legal analytics, case outcome prediction, legal document creation and assembly, computable contracts, legal research and law firm management).

Through research and discussion, the Centre aims to explore current topics within the realm of AI and Law. For example: AI is automating some tasks in law traditionally done by lawyers, creating hurdles in employment.

The Centre also aims to highlight the ethical standards in AI and Law today wherein bail or sentencing decisions for criminal defendants could be premised on biased data sets used to build these systems. There are also many privacy issues involved with the increased application of AI in law, by using machine learning to infer likely private facts about people based upon friend networks, tweets and credit scores.

Through regular discussions and lectures, the Centre shall facilitate a vivid understanding of AI and Law that shall help the potential audiences in handling issues pertaining to AI that impact our lives every day and the way forward. The objective is to immerse the students, policymakers and civil society by sensitizing them on the interaction between law, society and technology.

 

Requirement

The Centre is currently hiring for the following two positions:

  • Research Intern: (Two)
  • Research Fellow: 2 (Two)

 

Roles & Responsibilities

  1. Preparing monthly Newsletters that shall comprise the latest developments in the field of Artificial Intelligence that impacts the legal field, recent scholarly articles, leading cases, summary of events organized by the Centre etc;
  2. Conducting monthly discussion on AI, Law its impact on society while also preparing and circulating a concept note before the session and documenting a summary of the take away from the session;
  3. Assist in conducting training Programs on AI for Civil Society and government officials, etc;
  4. Advocacy with regulatory bodies: Submitting suggestions to government agencies in the form of policy reports to the Centre;
  5. Assist in creating a database on AI, Law & Society;
  6. Writing for Op-eds, Blogs, Journals, leading websites on AI.

 

Eligibility

4th year and 5th year students enrolled in any Indian Law School approved by the Bar Council of India.

 

Compensation/Benefits

  • This is an unpaid engagement.
  • However, students will get an opportunity to interact with leading practitioners, scholars and Centers that work on Artificial Intelligence from a legal perspective.
  • A certificate of completion of internship/fellowship will be provided along with letter of recommendation.
  • Additionally, all requisite support during the tenure of internship/fellowship shall be provided.

 

Mode of Work

  • Online and approximately a commitment of 7-9 hours a week is expected.
