About the Organisation
The University of Georgia is a public research university with its main campus in Athens, Georgia. Founded in 1785, it is one of the oldest public universities in the United States.
Named after the former U.S. Secretary of State who taught at the University of Georgia School of Law in the last decades of his career, the Dean Rusk International Law Center has served since 1977 as a nucleus for global research, education, and service. From its home in Dean Rusk Hall, a modern edifice dedicated in 1996, the Center builds upon a Georgia Law tradition of excellence in international law that dates to 1940.
About the Course
Name of the Course: Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree for foreign-trained lawyers
In 1973, Edward de Jaegher of Brussels, Belgium, became the first foreign-trained lawyer to earn a Master of Laws, or LL.M., degree at the University of Georgia School of Law. In the ensuing four decades, the law school and its Dean Rusk International Law Center have produced more than 500 LL.M. graduates, with ties to 75 countries and every continent in the world.
Our LL.M.s include judges and law firm partners, leaders in governments and in intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, CEOs and heads of corporate legal departments, and university professors and administrators. They form a valued part of the law school’s vast network of more than 10,500 J.D., LL.M., and M.S.L. alumni and alumnae.

Individualized education at a top U.S. law school
As a member of our select class of LL.M. students, you will pursue a one-year, full-time plan of courses side by side with J.D. candidates, gaining exposure to diverse viewpoints on a range of legal issues. You’ll follow a flexible curriculum tailored to your own career goal, whether it is preparation to sit for a U.S. bar examination, the pursuit of a Concentration affording advancement in your home country’s legal profession or academic institutions, or something else.

Qualifications required of LL.M. candidates
To enroll in LL.M. studies at the University of Georgia School of Law, you must have completed the following (typically, receipt of an LL.B. will satisfy these two criteria):
- Earned a degree equivalent to the Juris Doctor, or J.D., from a recognized non-U.S. law school; and
- Fulfilled the educational requirements for admission to the practice of law in a foreign country.
You also must demonstrate proficiency in English, by one of the following means:
- Submitting a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score totaling 95, with no less than a score of 20 in the speaking section and no less than 20 in the writing section. Apply for TOEFL.
- Submitting an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 7.0, with no individual band score below 6.5. Apply for IELTS.
- Securing a waiver. A waiver may be granted if English is your native language or you earned a degree from an institution of higher education where instruction is conducted in English. Completion of an English-language certificate program will not, alone, meet the requirements for a waiver. Contact LLM@uga.edu to seek a waiver.
